Esther’s Inheritance – play adaptation by Michael Johnston

Esther’s Inheritance is an adaptation of the novel of that name by Sandor Márai for which the stage rights are said by the copyright holders to be available. (Readers may remember Christopher Hampson adapted the Hungarian novelist’s Embers).

It has a real Chekhovian atmosphere. In the play, Esther awaits the return of the deceiving Lajos who abandoned her and married her sister. Now the sister is dead and Esther feels he will take all she has left and which, she realises, she will willingly give him.
